Assam is a land of wooded hills, wide meandering rivers and sprawling tea gardens. With the Red River, the Brahmaputra, flowing through it, this north-eastern state has a colourful, largely tribal population and produces almost 60% of India's tea.
The capital Guwahati is the gateway to the Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the last remaining strongholds of the one-horned rhinoceros. The worlds largest River Island is famous for its twenty-two 15th Century "satras". These are Hindu vashnev (followers of Lord Vishnu) monasteries functioning as centers of Assamese arts. The worship of Lord Vishnu is through dance, music and poetry. The satras take in young boys and groom them. The daily routine includes working in the fields, tending cattle, prayer, discussion and study. The satras have also nurtured certain art and craft traditions, which can now be found only here. In Natun Samugri satra for instance, one can still find the craft of mask-making; Kamlabari satra still makes the finest boats.
Contact UsTezpur has a very old connection with the Tea Gardens and British. During British rule it used be a leading point for loading Tea for carrying them in Steamers. The graveyard of Alexander Bruce , the father of Indian tea Industry is at Christian Cemetry at Tezpur. The Rail station and the existng railway line towards Rangapara was built by British. The old stations at Saloni Bari & Tezpur still have the old structures intact. The Monabarie Tea estate is once the largest tea estate existing. Early morning you can also catch the glimpse of Mt Sela & Mt Kangto in Arunachal Pradesh from here.
Contact UsNameri National Park, covering an area of about 200 sq. kms, is located at the foothills of the eastern Himalayas 35km from Tezpur, the nearest town. The park is the second Tiger reserve of Assam and is a haven for many rare animals. The rich wildlife includes tiger, black bear, elephant, leopard, indian bison, pangolin, indian wild dog, civet cat and capped langur. Also found here are over 300 species of birds such as the endangered white winged wood duck.
Orang national park popularly known as mini Kaziranga, is located on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra and is about 30 km from Tezpur town. The park covering an area of 72-sq-kms was established as a sanctuary in 1985 and declared a National Park on 13th April 1999. It is famous for its natural scenic beauty as well as one horned rhinos
