Karnataka is the eighth largest state by population. Kannada, one of the classical languages of India, is the most widely spoken and official language of the state. Karnataka is derived from the Kannada words karu, meaning "black", and nadu, meaning "region", as a reference to the black cotton soil found in the Bayalu Seeme region of the state.
Kerala, a state on India's tropical Malabar Coast, has nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline. It's known for its palm-lined beaches and backwaters, a network of canals. Inland are the Western Ghats, mountains whose slopes support tea, coffee and spice plantations. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state.
